Design Brief

Behula Couture draws inspiration from the ancient Bengali folktale of Behula, the devoted wife who journeyed to the realm of gods to save her husband. This couture collection translates the epic narrative into wearable art, featuring intricate motifs of serpents, lotuses, and celestial elements. Each piece represents a chapter of Behula's journey—from mortal devotion to divine intervention.

01

The Legend

Behula's story is one of unwavering devotion and courage. When her husband Lakhindar was killed by a serpent on their wedding night, Behula embarked on a perilous journey, floating down a river on a raft with his body, to reach the gods and plead for his life. Her determination and purity of heart moved the gods, who restored her husband to life.

02

Design Narrative

The collection is structured as a visual journey: 'The Wedding' (celebratory pieces), 'The Tragedy' (dramatic, dark elements), 'The Journey' (flowing, water-inspired silhouettes), and 'The Divine' (ethereal, goddess-like couture pieces with celestial embellishments).

03

Motif & Symbolism

Serpent scales are translated into intricate beadwork and sequin patterns. Lotus flowers—symbols of purity and rebirth—appear as three-dimensional fabric sculptures. Flowing water is represented through draped organza and silk layers. Celestial elements are captured in star-burst embroidery and metallic threadwork.

04

Craftsmanship

Each garment required over 200 hours of handwork. Techniques include Bengali kantha embroidery, zardozi work with gold threads, hand-beaded serpent scales, fabric manipulation for sculptural elements, and layered organza draping for ethereal effects.

05

Silhouette & Construction

Structured bodices with dramatic sleeve details, flowing skirts with multiple layers, asymmetric hemlines suggesting movement, and dramatic trains symbolizing Behula's journey.
